Once a cradle to grave, now a cradle to cradle.

In his book Cradle to Cradle, William McDonough talked about the possibility of a circular future, a future where everything we made, everything we used had a second life.

Imagine a future where everything is seen as a resource. Where everything is valued, where everything can be used again and again. Where nothing goes from cradle to grave, where nothing is seen as waste.

The Seymour Recycling Centre is all about a hopeful future. Circular in plan, it’s designed to deliver on the promise of a circular economy.

The facility is an exercise in super functional planning, where an infinite loop spirals around every type of waste and recycling stream possible. From mattresses to car batteries to fridges to hard rubbish, polystyrene and soft plastics — waste that was once cradle to grave is now cradle to cradle.

As you drive around this circuit, the user experience is effortless, engaging and educational. Users know where to place what product and they don’t need to worry if they get to the end of the loop and they still have items in their trailer, they can simply do another circuit. A central landscaped habitat within the loop is a poignant reminder to the user of what’s at stake if we don’t recycle and the fragility of nature and the planet we exist within.

Mitchell Shire Council were an aspirational client looking to build a facility that was world leading, that would look at twenty different waste streams in an attempt to divert 100% of waste away from landfill.

We worked closely with them to deliver an elegant building with a clear-cut, legible user interface that sent a clear message about their commitment to a circular future and the importance of understanding waste as a resource.

We acknowledge the Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which the Seymour Recycling Centre stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture.
