Market Garden serves as a temporary trading pavilion that initiates a layered programmatic and experiential outcome for the trader, shopper and visitor at the famous Queen Victoria Markets. Through contextual ground floor markings and super graphics that reference and describe the narrative of the current site, traders will have a defined place of business beneath a productive and seasonal greenhouse.
Above the trading floor an enclosed, functioning greenhouse will become both a productive and educational tool — overflowing with crops and aquaponic systems that can be seen, touched and smelled along a productive walkway. Taking lead from London, Tokyo and Brooklyn’s urban farm models — the pavilion will become a live, thriving, fresh food haven that simultaneously provides relief from the urban heat island effect. Market Garden delivers environmental, financial and social sustainability for the City of Melbourne.
We acknowledge the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which QVM Market Garden Pavilion was designed to stand upon. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture.
