A village within The Village.
Delivered under a co-housing model for a pre-existing resident community, Urban Coup is situated at the southern end of The Nightingale Village. A collaboration between Breathe, Architecture architecture and Hayball on the design and delivery, the building is the first vertical community of its kind in Australia.
Urban Coup is a deliberative housing community of 60 residents who were dissatisfied with housing in Melbourne, disappointed in the lack of effort in sustainability and disappointed in the lack of community. They wanted to take control of their own housing future, together, in more socially integrated ways.
In collaboration with the residents, the building has been thoughtfully crafted to encourage a durable, unified community. Its architecture allows for a deeper association with the local area, a greater connection to the Nightingale Village, and the formation of a caring, familial atmosphere within its walls.
The Urban Coup development includes communal kitchen and dining facilities, workshop spaces, a yoga room, music room and productive rooftop gardens. The ultimate outcome was a precinct that achieved both the community’s ambitions and environmental objectives, completely free of carbon emissions.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Nightingale 1 stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture.
