Wellness Retreat — A Sanctuary in the Forest

Tucked into the lush Dandenong Ranges, Mountain House is an evolving retreat — a home being carefully transformed through staged renovations. For a family moving from the city to the forest, the vision was clear: to create a place of restoration, connection, and deep immersion in nature.

A Space to Slow Down

Designed as a haven of stillness, the wet room embraces raw, natural materials and a timeless aesthetic. Natural stone flooring anchors the space, while exposed timber joists bring warmth overhead. At its heart, a sculpted marble bath and basin sit in quiet elegance, paired with handcrafted brass tapware.

More than just a functional space, this retreat is an experience — one that soothes both body and mind. The sauna, cocooned by greenery, invites moments of pause, while original steel-framed windows offer sweeping views of the valley beyond.

The bathing space is centred around the hand finished stone bath, a sculptural invitation to unwind. Lush indoor plants soften the edges, while a floor-to-ceiling steel-framed window blurs the boundary between inside and out, opening onto a secluded fernery.

A Return to Essential Beauty

A restrained palette of natural and reclaimed materials — textured slate, aged timber, raw marble, and timeworn masonry —gives the space a quiet, grounded beauty. Every element has been carefully considered, allowing the materials to speak for themselves. This is a place where design is pared back to its essence, creating clarity, balance, and a deep sense of calm.

Immersive. Biophilic. Elemental.

Soft, ambient lighting casts a golden glow, enhancing the warmth and texture of the materials. An expansive steel-framed window acts as both a shower screen and a portal to the landscape beyond — welcoming in the morning light and dissolving the line between architecture and nature.

This is more than a wellness space. It’s a retreat, an experience, and a reconnection with what truly matters.
