Welcome to Artefact House, a home that embraces the artistic journey of a growing family of three. Nestled in the neighborhood of Coburg, this two-bedroom Californian bungalow has been lovingly restored to honor its timeless charm. The homeowners, a gifted ceramicist and a talented pianist, envisioned a modest renovation that would breathe new life into their beloved dwelling.
Artefact House pays homage to the treasured creations crafted by the homeowners and their loved ones. Preserving the original structure, we embarked on an internal reconfiguration, introducing new openings to enhance the flow of natural light. The house retains its heritage allure, showcasing existing picture rail shelves, while the enduring timber floorboards and wall lining have been meticulously preserved. Even the cherished stained glass doors were thoughtfully repurposed, adding a touch of nostalgia to the revitalized space.
A striking timber frame and glass wall now grace the living areas, creating a seamless transition to a sunroom/dining room and a flexible office/guest room at the rear of the house. This addition not only floods the existing living spaces with light but also provides a captivating backdrop for the stunning collection of handmade ceramics and artefacts, displayed on the deep timber reveals.
Our material selection draws inspiration from the house’s existing elements and details. Warm recycled Tasmanian oak timber floorboards bring a sense of history, while FSC certified spotted gum veneer joinery and solid benchtops draw inspiration from the existing materials. Recycled brickwork and salvaged furniture, ingeniously transformed into a bathroom vanity, further enhance the eco-conscious ethos of Artefact House. The bathroom features charming terracotta tiles, and even the pizza stone in the kitchen is an eco-friendly marvel, crafted from discarded marble offcuts that were diverted from landfill. To add a touch of sophistication, handmade ceramic basins created by the homeowners take center stage, and throughout the space, raw brass accents add a delightful touch of character.
Artefact House is more than just a home; it’s a testament to the power of creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainable design. Step inside and immerse yourself in a world where artistry meets functionality, and cherished artefacts find their rightful place in a sanctuary of inspired living.
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which Artefact House stands. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and culture.
